CONFIDENTI A L.

(4.S.R. 71/40)

Hong Kong is by no means the least liable of the Empire defences to attack. The risk is ever present and someone must be here to meet it. Even if the attack were not a mass attack, which it may yet be, there are raiders at large ecch of which keeps many ships employed in search of it. The sinking of only one raider in Hong Kong waters would, for the entire durɛtion of the war, be a great contribution by the sea defence forces of Hong Kong.

We have volunteered for General Service. The Admiralty knows it and will cell upon us for service elsewhere when we are required. We

the are doing our job for the Empire in. we are doing it well. It is Empire which is at wɛr. We may require fortitude to counter restless- ness just as 99% of the men of the Empire will require it end, I think we have it. If, however, any officer would like to discuss that aspect I would ask him to speak to me.
